Origin of "The Lawns"
Bounded by Le Fanu, Clifden and Blackditch Roads, the park was named after the Irish author Sheridan Le Fanu but is known locally simply as the "Lawns". Its 17 hectare were developed in the 1960's as a soccer sportsground to cater for the burgeoning interest of a young population. Tennis courts were added in the early 1980's and the Sean Dunne Swimming Pool in the 1970's. The South East corner of the park was the former site of a burial ground and church dating from medieval times. Work has recently been completed on a major leisure/recreational facility on the old swimming pool site.
